Eight local groups from the Queens Park area have today (Friday 8 August) been named as the successful applicants in the 2008 Quattro: The New Queens Park community grants program.
A special presentation ceremony was held at the Quattro Sustainable Home, with representatives from each of the successful groups on hand to receive their grant from Quattro: The New Queens Park project partners Peet Limited and the Department of Housing and Works.
Peet Limited Managing Director Brendan Gore said it was encouraging to see what a difference the grants can make to the organisations and groups who receive them.
“Whether it’s offering assistance to a grass-roots project, supporting a community event or local organisation, we have seen fantastic work flow from the Quattro community grants program,” Mr Gore said.
This is the third round of the community grants program which has now resulted in some 19 different community projects share in almost $20,000 in much needed funds.
One of this round’s recipients, Queens Park Primary School, has received two separate grants this year and Parents and Citizens Association President Chris Lockyer said it was great to see support being given to so many community programs in the area.
“We are very grateful to receive these grants, one of which will help us send two of our students to the ‘People to People’ World Leadership Forum in Washington DC in March next year,” Mr Lockyer said.
The eight successful grant recipients in this round of funding are:
Canning District Cricket Club: Funds will be used to grow and strengthen the club by holding a Summer Kids Cricket Camp, promoting cricket in the Queens Park area and allocating a grant to a junior player from Queens Park juniors.
Queens Park Junior Football Club: This club, along with its 160 junior players aged five to 17 years will put their funding towards a Family Gala Day, holding the event for the club’s families and promoting it to the broader community.
Queens Park Primary School: Queens Park Primary School has a vast multicultural community. Funds allocated to the school will go towards creating a series of multicultural vegetable gardens by year six and seven students, as well as staff and families.
The Richmond Fellowship of WA – Queens Park: The Richmond Fellowship supports individuals diagnosed with a mental illness and funding will go towards hiring the Queens Park Recreation Centre and equipment for participants to join in activities such as badminton, basketball and netball.
World Shotokan Karate Federation – Queens Park Dojo: The Queens Park Dojo provides karate classes for females in the Queens Park area and is run by volunteer instructors. The classes give participants the opportunity to learn in the company of fellow females in an environment without intimidation. The Dojo will put their funding towards reducing fees, venue hire, instructor education and insurance.
Joint Submission – St Joseph’s Parish and St Norbert College Parents and Friends: A joint submission made by these two groups will see the purchase of a defibrillator for use in the broader Queens Park community.
Queens Park Primary School Parents and Citizens Association: Two lucky students from Queens Park Primary will attend the ‘People to People’ World Leadership Forum in Washington DC in March 2009 as a part of the school’s Youth Leadership Program. Trent Murdoch and Alexander Cullen (both aged 12) will represent Australia and the Queens Park Community at the forum.
LinC Church Services Networking Canning Inc: LinC is a community organisation comprising eight churches that provide volunteers to assist residents in the Canning area with valued services such as assistance with transport, meals, gardening, maintenance and hospital appointments. LinC will put their funding towards a volunteers training conference in Baldivis. The conference is aimed at promoting volunteerism and improving people-handling skills and service when working in the community.
Tony De Barro, Director Land and Housing Developments at the Department of Housing and Works said the sponsorship initiative is an important part of the project’s commitment to supporting the Queens Park community.
“The Department of Housing and Works is very pleased to again be involved in this worthwhile initiative and I encourage all local groups to apply for the grants next year,” Mr De Barro said.
